Shiloh Horse Rescue began as a dream to make a difference. Jill Curtis, wife of Hollywood Legend, Tony Curtis, has always been an avid horse aficionado. Jill and her sister, Sarah Vandenberg, rode horses all their lives. Jill trained horses and eventually founded the Briarwood Riding School in San Diego. Jill was an active teacher at Briarwood and eventually turned over the reins of the school to her sister, Sarah. Horses are in Jill’s blood.
In the Summer of 2003, Jill was watching an episode of Oprah about “using your life” to its potential. Inspired by the show, Jill began researching the topic of horse rescue: her research led her to some horrific results. Thousands of beautiful and useful horses are slaughtered each year for human consumption. That very night, Jill made the commitment to start a slaughter horse rescue. With the full support of her famous husband, Jill has turned a 40-acre parcel in Sandy Valley into a haven for neglected, abused, and weary horses.
Since its start, Shiloh has helped to save over 500 horses, 309 of which came straight from slaughter auctions. Jill and her mother, Sally Vandenberg, travel all over the country to rescue horses from the jaws of slaughter, often having to outbid the killer-buyers right at the doors of the slaughter house.
Shiloh’s goal is to rehabilitate these rescued horses and adopt them out to caring and loving places. Horses adopted from Shiloh go everywhere: some go to generous families, some are adopted to show homes, some are competing in Three Day Events and winning. Those horses that cannot be adopted are provided a safe and healthy place to live out their days at Shiloh. Jill and Sally work with approximately 70 volunteers and weekend carrot feeders to make Shiloh what it is today.
When Jill and Sally are not at the ranch or at a slaughter auction, they are busy working with other volunteer groups to make a difference. The duo take horses to schools to teach them about rescues, they entertain Girl Scout troops at the ranch to teach them about horses, and they provide a place for veterinary students to learn about horse issues such as lameness and other horse specific illnesses. Jill and Sally’s latest efforts have taken them to Washington D.C. where they started lobbying Congress to gain support for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. The work is long, hard and often emotional, but with her husband Tony Curtis as her biggest supporter, Jill always has a smile on her face.
